I started because I've been surffering chronic pelvic pain syndrome for two years. One symptom of the pain, for me, is tremendous amounts of pelvic heat and perspiration. These caused inflammation and irritation, which caused more heat, and a feedback cycle ensued. One day I just thought "This is so bad, if I can't reduce the pain, at least maybe I can reduce the heat." Into the cold bath I went. It's amazing. I feel more alive, happier, more energetic, and less in pain! The perspiration and moisture are greatly reduced. I recently had a cold shower (the hot water tap was left fully off) and it was nearly a spiritual experience. It's certainly consciousness-altering. I recommend this for everyone, even people who aren't ill. Of course, I don't recommend this for anyone who doctors advise shouldn't do it, such as pregnant women.
